There is a plaque on the wall of BelloMill Cottage with an inscription commemorating Williams birthplace.
The inscription reads : 

The Birthplace of William Murdoch, Inventor of Lighting by Gas, 1754 - 1938

Erected by The North British Association of Gas Engineers
